Without a doubt the saddest part of the Katrina saga is the story of people stranded and left behind. People who crawled up into their ceilings to live for days without aid. Animals and humans all clung to anything they could grab hold of, hoping to survive the flood, only to die on the roofs with no food, water, or relief from the sun...

Dozens of levees were breached during the storm surge that came with Hurricane Katrina. Nearly 2000 people died, and hundreds of thousands were traumatized and scarred. The damage cost nearly $100 billion, and people didn’t know whether the city could ever recover.

But even as New Orleans was rebuilt, and now that it is again the center of a huge rebounding tourist industry and is the pride of Louisiana, we could not forget those faces in the attic. The people who were stranded in their homes.

There is a greater lesson here. No, not just the most important (and obvious one)—listen to hurricane warnings, and evacuate early. You can do nearly anything if you put your mind to it. People and animals survived this tragedy by
sheer will to live. Let’s live each day as if it’s your last. Because it just might be.
