The Irish Spring Elephant: A Lesson In Achieving Your Dreams/Goals
 
Many decades ago, when I was a young girl, my mother did something that I had never seen her do before and have never her seen her do again. But it has remained in my memory all these decades and has helped me through many difficult decisions I have had to make in my life...

She carved an elephant out of a bar of Irish Spring!!!
I will never forget that summer day when I saw her open that new package of Irish Spring with an ordinary paring knife from the kitchen. She sat down outside and began carving. I was watching her intently wondering what she was doing and what she was trying to carve. It was amazing – when she was finished, she handed me a perfectly shaped green
elephant that looked like the ones I had seen made from jade.

“Mom,” I exclaimed, “how did you know how to do that?”
“Oh, it was easy. I just cut away everything that didn’t look like an elephant.”

Wow!!! What a powerful statement!!!!

Think about that for a for a minute. How many times in our lives have we had an obstacle in our lives that we had to figure out a solution to go around it or through it so we could move forward? How many times have you had dreams and goals you wanted to achieve but wasn’t sure what steps you needed to take to accomplish them? How many desires and hopes did you simply let go of because you didn’t see the path you need to take to make it happen?

I challenge you to think of a goal you want to achieve, and then write down all the steps you need to accomplish it. And then start Step #1. Its okay if you have to take a step backwards and to start over or take your plan in a different direction until you reach your goal.

Remember, it’s easy! You just need to cut away everything that doesn’t look like an elephant!
