Fifty and some odd years they’ve been together More than half a century In the beginning there was such expectation Sharing secrets and meals Beds and dreams Vows exchanged and promises made Children delivered Family dynamics She kept the house and cooked the meals Fetched drinks and picked up dirty clothes off the floor Made herself invisible because she hated what she saw Lonely but pushed everyone away Except for her man He was her world, her lifeline, her connection Fifty and some odd years they’ve been together More than half a century She sits in her wheelchair in a strange room Wondering about the vows exchanged and promises made Nothing is familiar Strangers bathe and dress her She hasn’t fetched or picked up in a long time Even the power to be invisible loses it’s usefulness Everyone is invisible here Lonely is the constant And where is her man? Her world? Her lifeline? Her connection? He visits for 30 minutes, makes small talk and goes home Where he feels free Someone else keeps the house and cooks the meals The connection long broken.
