My father had a friend named Bill Davis. My father respected and adored him; he was a great chemist, and was competent and brilliant. Not only that, Bill Davis had 'IT': that special quality of knowing how to treat people. And Dad respected him as the leader he was...
When Bill started a chlorine factory in Plaquemine, Louisiana, my father
followed him, and they literally built the plant from the cement floor up together. And Dad later retired from there as a Chemical Superintendant. Not bad for a Depression baby – small town – no college – Cajun farm boy with nine brothers and sisters who raised themselves with their father after the early death of their mother Irene. When my father came home from the chemical plant, he’d absolutely reek of chlorine. It would blow you out if you were in a small room with him. I could never forget that smell. Something happened 19 years later that changed the course of the rest of my life. One summer I went to work for a construction company that was laying pipe racks in the chemical plant. The south Louisiana July and August heat was sweltering hot, and to make things worse, I was a welder’s helper and I wore a long-sleeved, denim shirt with steel-toe boots, a hard hat, and a respirator around my neck in case of a chlorine leak. You also had to have eye goggles on. It was brutal. That was one of the most important summers of my life. One day it dawned on me that sitting in an air-conditioned college classroom at 72 degrees, having to read books, and writing on a piece of paper seemed so “inspirational.” I said to myself: “Dude, you need to get your ass back in college because physical labor is definitely not what you want to do for the rest of your life.” And that is what I did. But not without some additional “detours” along the way.
