Is there a Team Member you see in your mind’s eye when you read the title above?
One of the topics at Marvelous Performance Systems (UniverseOfCoverage.com) that our Business Owners often discuss with me is ‘what to do with Uninspired, Goal Limited, Low Energy team members’. These individuals seem to do just enough to stay employed, lack intrinsic motivation and don’t feel compelled to execute loftier High Value Activities required in our ever changing business, e.g. technology, leveraging social media, adapting to ever-changing company platforms. They drift through life without a clear direction or ambition.
Do you notice that some of your team members seem to naturally have a resilient mindset and others don’t? Why is that?
Often Business Owners report to me that these behaviors drain and interrupt the momentum needed for a well-oiled, high-performing team. Many report feeling held hostage by these team members. In reality, they are actually held hostage by not having a system to recruit new talent. None of us were hired because the company thought we had great recruiting skills, but that activity is essential in our roles and is needed now more than ever. A key aspect of the psyche of the team members we’re talking about seems to be an unusually strong resistance to change. For example, if you attempted to vary their income because your own business income is inconsistent, then prepare for a mutiny. It’s sad because these seemingly rigid team members are actually your organization's BIGGEST RISK TAKERS - they just don’t recognize that fact. To put a finer point on this, consider the following quote: “The Risk that this type of team member takes is that when their skills are not improving, their knowledge is not improving, their personal development is not improving, their work habits are not improving — they will wake up one day totally irrelevant and weakly skilled offering little value.” - Marvin LeBlanc, LUTCF, CNP Come Hell or High Water, Life Lessons from Hurricane Katrina - Facing Life’s Greatest Challenges No Matter What The result is that the illusion of security provided by the steady paycheck they’ve always wanted will be gone. Consider the example of a disabled construction worker refusing to develop computer skills even though the training is provided by their company so that they can re-enter the workforce. This happens daily! You know these people - many are your customers! If you would, please share your feedback on the question below: What Best Practices are you using to coach these resistant team members toward more consistent, higher quality daily work performance?
