As a licensed insurance and financial services professional for 35 years, I have served many residents in the state of Louisiana and learned a great deal about their experiences with the insurance industry.
The question many of these fine people have asked is, "What makes Marvin LeBlanc Insurance Agency special? And why would it matter to me?"
The answer is simple. I operate with a consistent process and use a valuable system to assist my clients - the Client Profile system.
Many people think price is the most crucial aspect to consider when buying insurance, but this is not true.
Price is not everything. Understanding the client is everything.
Many people are afraid of talking to an insurance agent because they don't know what to expect or don't know what to ask.
My simple one-page Client Profile is essentially a "talk sheet" that allows me to gather information and take away the insurance mystery. It's broken down into three sections that will enable me to ask questions and gather information about your situation to understand your needs better. We won't even talk about policies, packages or prices until we can chat and work through the Client Profile talk sheet together.
There are the three sections on the Client Profile
In this section, I request basic information like your name, occupation, marital status, a preferred method of communication and who is in your household. You may be wondering why your marital status is important. If your marital status changes, it can affect your financial plans and needs.
The preferred method of communication is also essential as many people now prefer text or email to a phone call, and we respect how you wish to be contacted. Understanding who is in your household can be helpful when considering if there are elderly parents or young children whose needs may need to be considered.
In this section, I'm asking permission to engage with you as the customer to gather vital information about your current insurance. To start, do you have health insurance coverage? If so, is it through your employer? Do you have disability coverage? Long-term? Short-term?
In many cases, this is where you, the customer, can ask for clarification on current coverage, like what disability insurance does and how it can help if you become sick or injured and can't work.
We also need to know if you currently have life insurance and whether it is through your employer. If you have life insurance outside of a work policy, understanding when and why you bought it helps us address any changes to your family or financial situation. We ask about current insurance to ensure you have one point of contact with us in the event of a death in the family. In some cases, the spouse is not aware that they must submit a death claim to the insurance company if their partner passes away.
The passing of a loved one is a traumatic time, and as the surviving spouse, you want the process to be as painless as possible. An insurance professional can help with the process and get you through this difficult time.
If you haven't caught it yet, we do things a little differently at Marvin LeBlanc Insurance. We're not a quoting service; we're a people service.
This section covers retirement planning. We want to know information like:
Do you have a 401K plan – an employer-sponsored savings plan?
Do you have a pension through your employer?
For example, I grew up in a small town in south Louisiana, and many people worked at a chemical plant. When they retired, they got a pension. Not many companies do this anymore, so it’s critical for us to understand whether you have a pension. Also, let us know if you're not going to qualify for Social Security. Let us know if you don't know how much you will get from Social Security when you retire so we can investigate this for you.
Do you have an IRA – Individual Retirement Account?
If not, you may qualify for one.
In addition to the above sections, we like to ask our clients other questions to get to know them better, including:
Have you ever had any financial planning or estate planning?
Have you ever visited with an attorney?
Do you have a will?
If not, are you aware that you can get a will made for $75? Are you also aware that in the state of Louisiana, you cannot die without a will? But you can die without your will.
Many people do not want to face the reality that they will eventually die, and do not write out a simple statutory will indicating who receives what. A statutory will means you can avoid any potential arguments within the family after you die.
A medical will is a one-page document that indicates your wishes of no additional life-saving resuscitation efforts signed by two physicians who consider your quality of life should you suffer a severe illness or medical event.
Do you have a PLUP – Personal Liability Umbrella Protection?
A PLUP is a protective umbrella that rides on top of your homeowners and automobile insurance policy.
Do you have a savings plan?
We may do nothing more than add this information into your confidential file, or we may have options for you to consider.
Are you a business owner?
There are programs for business owners that didn't exist a decade ago. We can help determine if you qualify for any.
What is your family income range?
This information helps us understand what tax bracket you are in to recommend a product that best suits your needs.
These may seem like a lot of questions, but I can tell you from personal experience how important it is to keep all your essential information in one place. I lost everything after Hurricane Katrina, but thankfully was able to retrieve all the data on my computers. It's easy to overlook the importance of keeping copies of information like birth certificates, policies, warranties and driver's licenses in one place. That's why having a great relationship with your insurance professional makes it easier to access your information if a catastrophic event like a flood or fire occurs.
